When people think of substations, they probably picture cold, impersonal transformers and a tangled web of wires. But to birds, this place is practically a paradise with no natural predators to bother them. As a result, magpies and crows flock here—some to make their homes, others to use the area as a makeshift restroom. For power grid workers, however, this poses a heart-stopping hazard: birds use wires and twigs to build their nests, and if any of these materials fall onto live parts, it’s a “bang”—a short circuit that trips the circuit breaker. Even if that doesn’t happen, a buildup of corrosive bird droppings can easily cause equipment to suddenly shut down.
