Birds really go to great lengths to build nests on power towers and substations—some carry twigs, others bring wire, and some even pick up shiny aluminum wires from construction sites. These items are treasures in their beaks, but once they fall onto our live insulator strings, they become potential hazards that could trigger a fault at any moment, forcing maintenance crews to get up in the middle of the night to make emergency repairs.
Even more of a headache is bird droppings, which are both conductive and corrosive. If they accumulate over a large area on insulators, they can easily cause contamination flashovers or line flashovers and tripping during rainy or foggy weather. In the past, power grid operators struggled with this issue constantly, but things have finally improved somewhat since the installation of these bird-dropping-proof umbrella-style insulator shields (hereinafter referred to as: bird-proof shields).
